I have ducks in a creek in my backyard. Do they pair up for mating? They're mallards but one is solid black?

What I mean is do they stay together once they mate, until the eggs hatch? Also, is it possible to breed across different varieties of ducks or are they separate species?

Most ducks are monogamous. They can be cross bred but it rarely if ever happens in the wild. The black duck may just be hanging around or has a gene that makes it black.
